Harm reduction is a range of intentional practices aimed at reducing the negative consequences associated with drug use. By incorporating evidence-based, practical strategies and policies, harm reduction helps empower people who use drugs to create positive change in their lives.

Free Narcan Dispenser

Narcan (naloxone) is a key part of the harm reduction strategy. It is used to reduce the immediate dangers associated with an overdose, such as accidental death. The Des Plaines Police Department is proud to house a free Narcan dispenser in our building. Made possible through a collaborative partnership with the Kenneth Young Center, the Narcan dispenser offers access to Narcan and Fentanyl testing strips. The dispenser is available to the public in the Des Plaines Police Department lobby (1418 Miner St.) 24/7, free of charge, no questions asked.

DPPD is committed to combatting the opioid crisis and reducing the number of overdose fatalities. To learn more about addiction and find related resources, view our Community Resource Guide or go to cookcountypublichealth.org.

Prescription Drug Disposal

The Des Plaines Police Department accepts old and unneeded medications for disposal. Bring the medications to the Police Station (1418 Miner St.) and DPPD will safely and anonymously take care of them for you. Members of the public can also dispose of prescription drugs at DEA Prescription Take Back Day events, which occur annually in the spring and fall. Follow our Facebook page to stay updated on Take Back Day events.
