Halloween Hike and Campfire

The Des Plaines Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America is hosting its Bonfire Bash on Saturday, October 28th from 4 - 7 pm at its location, 1841 S. River Road in Des Plaines. The event is free and open to the public. Take in the beautiful grounds of the Cook County Forest Preserves in their late fall glory. Stroll along a flashlight hike as the sky darkens. Warm up by a campfire. Enjoy refreshments. Bring a lawn chair and settle in. The Des Plaines Chapter is one of the country’s oldest and has been inviting others to enjoy and conserve nature since its founding in 1926. It has been housed in the historic Jefferson House on River Road since 1929. The Izaak Walton League of America just celebrated its 100th anniversary and is a national organization committed to conservation, preserving fish and wildlife habitats, and clean air and water. Just this year as part of its efforts to reach out to others, the chapter has hosted a Des Plaines Riverbank clean-up with Clean Up - Give Back, a program on bees and beekeeping, and a bird walk, all of which were open to the public. Plans are always in the works for future activities. In addition to its conservation outreach work, the club hosts an annual turkey party (coming up November 16th), wild game dinner, tea and history, and pig roast. Those interested in learning more about the club’s work are welcome to attend any business meeting, held the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm at the club’s meeting place, the historic Jefferson House, at 1841 S. River Road, Des Plaines.
