Looking for a sustainable and fun way to dispose of your pumpkin after Halloween? Community members are encouraged to bring their pumpkins, jack-o’-lanterns, and gourds to the City of Des Plaines and Des Plaines Park District Pumpkin Smash composting event on Saturday, November 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Prairie Lakes North Parking Lot, 515 E. Thacker St., Des Plaines (front parking lot).
Painted pumpkins are fine, but please remove any non-biodegradable materials:
Candles
Googly Eyes
Stickers
Plastic
Yarn
Pumpkin Smash is designed to help divert seasonal organic waste from landfills. Composting at Pumpkin Smash has year-round benefits as its organic materials break down and create a healthy compost that provides nutrients to soil and plants. Composting organic materials also reduces greenhouse gas emissions to benefit the environment. Please don’t put it in the trash; bring it to the smash and green your Halloween!
