On June 15th, the Des Plaines Public Library (DPPL) will host two events for Cards for Hospitalized Kids (CFHK), a charity that distributes uplifting, handmade cards to Children’s Hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses (RMH) in Illinois as well as across the country. During the events, library patrons will make handmade cards for CFHK to distribute to hospitals. The events, which are part of DPPL’s Craftivism 101 series that aims to get patrons involved with craftivist activities that promote empathy and sustainability, will be held at the library from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM. CFHK Founder Jen Rubino will also attend both events and speak to attendees about starting CFHK, the impact of the cards, and more. Inspired by her own experiences as a “hospitalized kid”, Rubino founded CFHK in 2011 when she was a local high school student at Maine South High School and a member of DPPL’s teen advisory board. She worked to build CFHK from the ground up into the national charity it is today. Hospitals in all 50 states now receive cards from CFHK. Over 500,000 cards have been distributed by CFHK since its inception.
