On Saturday, May 13th, from 1 - 3:30 pm, the Des Plaines chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America will host this year’s Tea and History program entitled Our Local Greenhouse History at the historic Jefferson House at 1841 S. River Road in Des Plaines. Emma Marston of the Des Plaines History Center will present, while attendees enjoy tea with scones, finger sandwiches and sweets. The price of admission is $12 and tickets can be obtained by contacting program chair Jen Conlon at 847.692.6447 or on the chapter’s website, www.iwla-desplaines.org.
The third in a series of annual teas, the Tea and History programs seek to inform the public about the history of the region and the longstanding commitment of the Izaak Walton League to nature. “May is just a wonderful time to gather in person, and we’ll hear about the area’s long history of greenhouses, all while enjoying tea and lovely food, in a terrific historic setting,” says Jennifer Conlon, event chair and member of the Izaak Walton League. “We appreciate all the support we have gotten for these teas. It’s a lot of fun.” The Izaak Walton League of America, also known as the IWLA or affectionately as the Ikes, has recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. The conservation organization is committed to practical solutions geared toward sustainable use of natural resources. The Des Plaines chapter is one of the nation’s oldest, chartered in 1926 and housed since 1929 in its historic location on River Road.
