The City Council meets on the first and third Monday of each month at 7 p.m., Room 102 in City Hall. In the case of a holiday, Council Meetings are held on the next day at the same time. All City Council meetings are open to the public (unless a specific exception applies under Illinois law). The meeting allows for general public comments, as well as comments on specific agenda items.

Holiday Tree Lighting and Winter Fair The City of Des Plaines hosts two holiday events every winter. The Holiday Tree Lighting at Metropolitan Square features food trucks, tree decorating, and a visit from Santa himself. The Winter Fair, held the day after the Holiday Tree Lighting, is held at the Des Plaines Public Library and features a seasonal makers market as well as historic trolley tours for residents who register in advance.
